PM quits Lib-Mods to found new Radical Left party in eve of election shock

TURING, Lagentia – The Prime Minister, Lord James Green, has delivered a massive bombshell by quitting the Liberal-Moderate Party which he led in order to found a new party the night before the general election.

Lord James Green, the caretaker Prime Minister for the past year as leader of the Lib-Mods, will now lead the new Radical Left Party into the general election.

The Liberal-Moderates have suffered a devastating split, with Lord Green and his key communications aide Lord Joe Norris forming the new Radical Left Party. Deputy leader and Minister of Defence, Lord Charles Michael (a former party leader and PM) has become the Acting Leader of the Lib-Mods. This has become something of a recurring nightmare for the Lib-Mods – former leader Lord Helliker famously crossed the floor to join Storm at the height of the data privacy scandal just before the election in 2019, which was followed by Lady Thornton’s defection to the RGA in the build-up to the 2020 election. The Lib-Mods have lost a lot of talent with this split: Lord Green had led the party’s policy development for almost two years, whilst Lord Norris had been the party’s communications expert. Even as a party of two, they make a highly competent team.

We are yet to hear from the PM or any of his new party’s spokespeople, so it’s not yet clear what their stance will be on Adammic political issues, other than that their name implies that they will probably have a much more economically left-wing platform than the Lib-Mods. We can probably expect a platform by the time ballots go out to voters at around midday. Meanwhile, the remaining Lib-Mod leadership have tried to press ahead with business as usual, publishing their election manifesto earlier this evening. Acting leader Lord Michael addressed the situation in his foreword to the manifesto, saying, “It is a shame that once again this party, the foundation of Adammia, has had its own foundations weakened by the only thing capable of cracking it; the weak morals of man.”

With the political future of the Empire resting on the six individuals who will form the Ruling Council, and with the dominant party suddenly split in two, a deadlock has suddenly become very likely. More than any other election before it, every single seat will count when it comes to forming a government. Eyes will turn to the provinces of Sheaffia and Corellia, which have not yet decided how to select their Ruling Council representatives. The Lib-Mods have already gained a step-up by ensuring that Greater Tytannia, a stronghold for the party, elects a Council member – a seat which will almost certainly go to Emperor Mother Jayne. They probably have the numbers to pull off a similar trick in Sheaffia, but only so long as the party’s members there don’t follow Green and Norris out of the door. Corellia, meanwhile, remains a holdout of the Storm and Independent parties; who they choose to align with could make all the difference. But of course, the whole point of the general election is to elect the three national councilors. We have two Lib-Mods, two Radical Left, one Independent Party and one properly independent on the ballot paper tomorrow. Six candidates for three seats – finally, after over two years, voters will get a real choice, and hopefully somebody will emerge with a meaningful democratic mandate. But how the votes distribute this weekend is impossible to predict, and we can only wait until the results livestream on Sunday night.
